BANKING AND CURRENCY
Currency
The currency of Namibia is The Namibian Dollar (NAD; symbol N$) is in note denominations of N$200, 100, 50, 20 and 10. Coins are in denominations of N$5, N$1, 50 cents, 10 cents and 5 cents. It is linked to the South African Rand (R) on a 1:1 basis (South African Rand = 100 cents). The South African Rand is also acceptable as currency in Namibia.
The import and export of local currency is limited to N$50,000. The import of foreign currency is unlimited, provided sums equal to or exceeding NAD5,000 are declared on arrival. Export of foreign currency is unlimited up to the amount imported and declared.
Banking
Banking hours: Monday - Friday 09h00 to 15h30 and Satuday 08h30 to 11h00
Banks are found in most towns, with most being closed on Sundays and public holidays. Most of them offer foreign exchange services - with cash, bank and credit cards as well as travellers cheques.
American Express, Diners Club, Mastercard and Visa are accepted. Credit cards are not usually accepted at petrol stations, so bear this in mind when you visit the ATM. Setting aside an emergency petrol cash fund is a good idea if you’re planning to drive.
You can also obtain cash from many of the ATMs. Several international banks have branches in main city centres. Always advise your bank that you are travelling outside of the country as they might block your purchases if they have not been informed.
To avoid additional exchange rate charges, take traveller's cheques in US Dollars or South African Rand. In general, you can expect a better exchange rate for traveller’s cheques than for cash.
Public transport in Namibia is geared towards the needs of the local populace, and is confined to main roads between major population centres. Although cheap and reliable, it is of little use to the traveller as most of Namibia’s tourist attractions lie off the beaten track.
It is easy to travel around Namibia by car, and a 2WD vehicle is perfectly adaquate for most journeys. However, long distances, poor mobile phone coverage outside of main towns and infrequent petrol stations that only accept cash mean that planning ahead is vital.
There are major airlines that fly into Windhoek and Swakopmund. Other destinations are reachable by car or charter flight.
Namibians drive on the left and all signposts are in English. Seat belts must be worn at all times and talking in a mobile phone while driving is prohibited. The general speed limit is 120km/h on tarred roads outside of towns and 100km/h on gravel roads. In built up areas, the speed limit is 60km/h.
Traditional Namibian cuisine is rarely served and so the food at restaurants tends to be European in style and is, generally, of a very high standard.
Namibia is very meat-orientated, and many menu options will feature steaks from various animals. However, there is usually a vegetarian and seafood section offered by most camps and restaurants.
In the supermarkets you'll find pre-wrapped fresh fruit and vegetables (though the more remote the areas you visit, the smaller your choice), and plenty of canned foods, pasta, rice, bread, etc. Most of this is imported from South Africa.
The water in Namibia's main towns is generally safe to drink, though it may taste a little metallic if it has been piped for miles. Natural sources should usually be purified, though water from underground springs and dry riverbeds seldom causes any problems. However, filtered and bottled water are readily available in most towns and all camps, lodges and hotels.
Partially covered by the Namib Desert, one of the world's driest deserts, Namibia's climate is generally very dry and pleasant – it's fine to visit all year round. Namibia only receives a fraction of the rain experienced by countries further east. Between about December to March some days will be humid and rain may follow, often in localised, afternoon thunderstorms. These are more common in the centre and east of the country, and more unusual in the desert.
April and especially May are often lovely months in Namibia. Increasingly dry, with a real freshness in the air, and much greenery in the landscape; at this time the air is clear and largely free from dust.
From June to August Namibia cools down and dries out more; nights can become cold, dropping below freezing in some desert areas. As the landscape dries so the game in the north of the country gravitates more to waterholes, and is more easily seen by visitors. By September and October it warms up again; game-viewing in most areas is at its best, although there's often a lot of dust around and the vegetation has lost its vibrancy.
November is a highly variable month. Sometimes the hot, dry weather will continue, at other times the sky will fill with clouds and threaten to rain – but if you're lucky enough to witness the first rains of the season, you'll never forget the drama.
Namibians have a somewhat relaxes attitude to dress codes. A jacket and tie is very unusual. In fact, long trousers and a shirt with buttons are often quite adequate for a formal occasion or work wear. A pair of sensible shoes, jeans and a t-shirt is recommended.
During the day it is generally hot, so pack light weight loose fitting clothes in natural fabrics, such linen or cotton, that will keep you cool and are easy to wash and dry.
Avoid blue clothing - the tsetse flies are drawn to the colour blue, and their bite can give you African Sleeping Sickness.
Long sleeved shirts and long trousers will protect your against mosquitoes at night.
Electrical sockets in Namibia are Type M (SABS-1661). If your appliance's plug doesn't match the shape of these sockets, you will need a travel plug adapter in order to plug in. Travel plug adapters simply change the shape of your appliance's plug to match whatever type of socket you need to plug into. If it's crucial to be able to plug in no matter what, bring an adapter for all types.
Electrical sockets in Namibia usually supply electricity at 230 volts AC / 50 Hz frequency. If you're plugging in an appliance that was built for 230 volt electrical input, or an appliance that is compatible with multiple voltages, then an adapter is all you need. If your appliance isn’t compatible with 230 volts, a voltage converter will be necessary.
After arrival at the Windhoek international Airport, meet with your guide and drive to Naankuse Lodge. Participate in the full carnivore feeding tour.
The next day you have the possibility to visit the Shiloh Rehabilitation Sanctuary in the morning, and to participate in a game drive in the afternoon.

NA'an Ku Se Wildlife Sanctuary Game drive
DAYS 3 - 4 : SOSSUSVLEI
Drive to Sossusvlei area in the southern Namib Desert. The Afternoon is at own leisure. Possibility for a Sundowner drive in the late afternoon to see the sunset from a scenic spot while sipping a drink of your choice.
The next morning visit Dune 45, which you have the opportunity to climb and enjoy the unfolding panorama around you. Take a leisurely walk to dead vlei to marvel at the age-old dead tree trunks on the white lake floor and surrounded by the worlds biggest sand dunes. On your way visit the Sesriem Canyon, a 36 metre-deep gorge cut into the limestone conglomerate. the afternoon is at leisure to relax at the pool from the morning activities.

Dune 45 : Named for its location 45 kilometres past the town of Sesriem, Dune 45 is renowned for its elegant shape, which – along with its position close to the road – have earned it the distinction of ‘most photographed dune in the world’. If you’re not keen for the strenuous hike to the top of Big Daddy, Dune 45 is a more forgiving alternative, standing at only 80 metres and featuring a much gentler gradient.

Dead Vlei : This ancient clay pan was once an oasis, studded with acacias and fed by a river that suddenly changed course, leaving the earth to dry up along with the trees it previously supported. So dry were the climatic conditions that the trees never decomposed – instead they were entirely leached of moisture so that today, 900 years later, they remain as desiccated, blackened sentinels dotting the pan’s cracked surface. Surrounded by the red-pink dunes of the Namibia Desert, they create a surreal spectacle that is a photographer's dream.

Sossusvlei - the red dunes : This magnificent desert wilderness of vast, rust-coloured sand dunes, clay pans and petrified forests lies in the Namib-Naukluft Park. Formed over countless centuries, some of the dunes measure up to 300 metres in height and are among the highest in the world. In the rare event of an especially wet rainy season, the ‘vlei’ – meaning marsh or wetland – of Sossusvlei fills up with water, and its glistening surface forms a strikingly beautiful contrast with the reddish dunes.

Sesriem Canyon : Sesriem Canyon, a deep chasm carved through the rocks by water, is a striking natural feature of the area that is best explored on foot. Stony walls rise up sharply on both sides of the canyon, while birds roost in its crags and lizards dart along the ledges. The canyon’s name was coined when early settlers used it as a water source, using six lengths of leather (‘ses riem – six thongs) tied together to lower buckets into the water at the base of canyon.

DAYS 5 - 6 : WALVIS BAY
Drive to the coast and Walvis Bay, traversing the desert from east to west. Spend the afternoon exploring the town and sip a cocktail for Sundowner watching the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean.
The next day spend a full day participating in a dolphin cruise in the morning and enjoying a 4x4 excursion to the freshwater lagoon of Sandwich Harbour in the afternoon. The return trip is a thrilling exercise in dune driving, where the off-road vehicles can show their best qualities as you cruise over the dune belt of the western Namib Desert.

Laramon tours dolphin cruise : Laramon Tours Dolphin Cruise offers guests the chance of seeing Benguela dolphins, Cape fur seals, bottlenose dolphins, and even humpback whales and leatherback turtles when in season. DAY 7 : CAPE CROSS
In the morning visit the town of Swakopmund and the Moon Landscape on your way to Cape Cross. Spend some time at the Zeila shipwreck just before Henties Bay. Check-in at cape Cross Lodge and in the afternoon visit the Cape Cross Seal Reserve to enjoy a myriad of seals sunbathing on the rocks and playing in the surfs.

Cape Cross seal colony: This colony of Cape Fur Seals is one of the largest in the world, home to approximately 80 000 to 100 000 of these so-called 'seals', which are in fact a species of sea lion. Day trips to the colony are offered and the seals can be viewed from a walkway at a distance of roughly 200 metres.

DAYS 8 - 9 : PALMWAG
Today you traverse the Skeleton Coast Park on your way to Grootberg Lodge. Visit the abandoned oil rig and stretch your legs at the guano station of Toscanini. Arrive at Grootberg Lodge around lunch time. In the afternoon you may want to participate in a scenic drive on the Grootberg plateau.
The next day you have the opportunity to participate in a lodge activity of your choice, which could be elephant or rhino tracking excursions. Damaraland is the the last refuge for the endangered black rhino and the last wilderness area, where these prehistoric beasts can roam freely. The region is also well known for its desert-adapted elephants, who have adjusted to the extreme desert conditions, surviving on much less water consumption and reduced food intake. Strangely enough, the desert elephants are the biggest of their kind in the world.

Grootberg lodge rhino tracking : Grootberg lodge rhino tracking involves guests being taken on an unforgettable exploration on foot amidst the cliffs of the Klip River Valley and rising plateau of volcanic basalt ridges, by dedicated guides and local trackers. The activity is managed, and the number of guests participating is restricted to a maximum of 10 people per day, to ensure that it is both natural and non-obtrusive for the animals.

Grootberg lodge elephant tracking : Grootberg Lodge Elephant Tracking is one of the most popular activities at the lodge. Guests set out in the early morning with a guide and a tracker to the surrounding farms in search of elusive desert elephants. Since the elephants roam free in the conservancy, sightings cannot always be guaranteed but the experience also gives one the opportunity to learn and appreciate more about the lifestyle of the local people. Lunch is provided in the shade of a tree in the remote wilderness of Damaraland. Guests can expect to return to the lodge during the early afternoon enriched by the beauty of Damaraland and its unique elephants.

Grootberg scenic drives : Grootberg lodge is situated in the Damaraland on the Etendeka Plateau and offers twice daily scenic drives on top of the plateau. Guests can experience a variety of wildlife sightings including zebra, antelope, jackal, springbok, kudu and oryx and occasionally leopard and lion. Grootberg Lodge is wholly owned by the local community and the continuous conservation efforts have resulted in wildlife numbers growing in this conservancy.

DAY 10 : ONGAWA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE
You have the opportunity to participate in a morning excursion to track down desert elephants. Upon return depart for Grootberg Lodge, which is literally around the corner. Check-in at Grootberg Lodge and prepare for a leisurely afternoon scenic drive. The scenery is magnificent and the right tuning in for the activities the following day.
The next day you have the choice between an elephant or rhino tracking excursion, both f which take place in the early morning and last until mid afternoon. Reminisce the remainder of the day on the experiences of the morning's happenings.

DAYS 11 - 12 : ETOSHA EAST
Another two days in paradise spent with game viewing while you cross the park and at the eastern confines of the park and Onguma Bush Camp bordering this terrestrial Garden Eden. This is elephant and rhino country, so enjoy the adventure.

DAYS 13 -14 : BUSHMANLAND
Drive further east to Fiume Bush Camp and visit the world's largest falling star, the 55-ton Hoba meteorite on the way. Meet the resident San (Bushmen) community and spend an exhilarating day with them to learn more about age-old survival skills and still living traditions.

Hoba meteorite : The largest known meteorite ever to hit the planet is thought to have done so approximately 80,000 years ago, when it landed in a remote part of Namibia. It was only unearthed many centuries later in 1920, when a farmer tilling his fields stumbled upon it. It was excavated but not transported, due to its stupendous weight of approximately 60 tons, and today can still be viewed at the original site of its discovery. Thought to be between 200 and 400 million years old, it is the biggest organic chunk of iron known to man, but also contains traces of substances which do not occur naturally on earth. It measures roughly three metres by three metres, with an average thickness of approximately one metre.

If you so wish, participate in the lion feeding after dinner and watch in awe while these majestic beasts devour their food.

Full carnivore feeding tour: Carnivore feeding tours are child friendly from any age but parents should take responsibility for their children. During the two and half hours drive you will visit our baboons, caracals, lions, cheetahs, wild dogs and leopards. Watch them being fed by our experienced guides while they explain how these carnivores came to live on this reserve. Followed by a scenic drive with a good chance of spotting some of the other wildlife. This is not just a great way to learn about these amazing animals and how they behave in the wild, it is also a great up close photo opportunity. Caracal experience: Take a walk with our habituated caracal and our guides. During this walk you will get to see how these animals behave in the wild, stalking birds and small mammals as they regain their natural instincts and hone their hunting skills. Barboom experience: Meet our playful primates and experience the joys of monkey fun on a not-to-be-missed baboon walk. All of our baboons came to N/a’an ku sê either after losing their mums (Namibia’s Chacma baboons are tragically persecuted on an almost daily basis), or having been rescued from situations of abuse. Our baboon buddies adore the interaction and bounding through the bush on their daily walks. Why not join in and get to know firsthand just how incredible these animals are?
Meerkat experience: Take the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enter N/a’an ku sê’s very own “Meerkat Manor”, and spend a magical two hours witnessing the delightful antics of the bushveldt’s most beloved residents. Meerkats are early risers, emerging from their dens from approximately 6.15AM. Hence you will be met at the main lodge building and then it’s off to enter a madcap meerkat world on N/a’an ku sê’s picturesque reserve. *Please note that even though we always do our utmost to ensure significant meerkat sightings, the animal kingdom plays by its own rules, thus sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Cheetah experience: Habituated cheetahs have lost their fear of humans – a fear that is crucial in elevating their survival chances in the wild. For this reason, some of the magnificent spotted sprinters at N/a’an ku sê need to remain in captivity, having come to the sanctuary from various conflict situations at very young ages, requiring dedicated care to ensure their survival. At N/a’an ku sê we fully nurture and encourage their natural behaviour, captivity resembling the life of their wild counterparts as closely as possible. Rhino feeding: Put your hat on, pull up those sleeves and jump on the back of the bakkie. We are going to feed the rhinos! Get on the back of the bakkie and drive to the shed, load your own lucerne bail, about 6-8 bails will be loaded & continue to the feeding spot. Watch while feeding take place, about 11-13 rhinos will be fed at once.

Le Mirage Resort & Spa, a unique construction in the Namib desert, is situated at 21 km from the Sesriem gate to Sossusvlei. This makes it one of the lodges closest to the Sossusvlei and the ideal place to stay when you want to visit the highest dunes in the world!
Guests are accommodated in 8 Camelthorn rooms and 19 Oasis rooms with en-suite facilities, air-conditioning, safe, mini bar and coffee & tea facilities. Desert elephant tracking
This is one of the Lodge’s most popular activities. Guests will be able to explore the Conservancy and surrounds whilst tracking the elusive desert elephant with the expert knowledge of a guide and tracker. Lunch is provided under the shade of a tree. Whilst sightings cannot be guaranteed, guests will still be able to experience the natural beauty of this remote wilderness area of Damaraland.

Rhino tracking
Guides and game trackers will take guests in an open 4x4 game vehicle into Black Rhino territory. Part of the tracking will take place on foot, with the possibility of between 1 to 3 hours walk at the most. Lunch will be enjoyed in the outdoors near the springs. This is almost a full day activity driving along bumpy roads and walking on rocky terrain. It is therefore not an advisable activity for the faint-hearted. Sightings are not guaranteed.

Sundowner drive
The Lodge offers scenic drives on top of the Etendeka Plateau with the possibility of seeing a variety of wildlife including zebras, antelope, jackal and occasionally leopard and lion. springbok, kudu and oryx are a permanent fixture and even the nervous and shy klipspringers are sometimes seen leaping from ledge to ledge on the steep cliffs of the mountain.

Moringa guided walk
An early morning guided walk after breakfast will allow guests to explore the plateau on foot. They will have an opportunity to see and learn about the local flora, the fascinating sedimentary and volcanic rock formation of the Etendeka Mountains and perhaps encounter the wildlife living on the plateau.

Damara culture tour
Guests will be guided through surrounding Conservancy farms visiting a couple of authentic homesteads of the Damara people. This provides an unique opportunity to spend time with local Namibians and custodians of the Conservancy understanding their origins, cultures, traditions and their approach to human wildlife conflict farming within the harsh desert landscape.
The tour includes a visit to the #Khoadi //Hoas Conservancy office to meet their staff followed by a visit to a a glass bead project. This will provide guests with the unique opportunity of understanding and gaining insight into the positive impacts and benefits that the Conservancy enjoys directly as a result of its ownership of the Grootberg Lodge.
Lunch is server under the trees in a remote spot in the wilderness of Damaraland.

Grootberg lodge restaurant
The staff are all employed from the community and well trained in their various duties. Guests are hosted in genuine local hospitality complimented by excellent food prepared by the well trained kitchen staff. The waitresses and barman are at the beckon-call of each guest, always ready to serve and assist where needed. The dinning area has a fire place for cold evenings during the winter months. Meals can also be enjoyed on the shaded outside veranda - weather permitting.
The restaurant has a fully licensed bar that serves a variety of drinks throughout the day and evenings.

Dinner is served in the dinning area overlooking a large waterhole. Here you will be treated to an excellent combination of European and traditional African cuisine while watching the game coming to drink.

Onguma sundowner drive: Onguma Nature Reserve consists of 34 000 hectares of Namibian wilderness & is home to numerous plains game, more than 300 bird species and even 4 of the Big 5. The Reserve boasts over thirty different animal species. Plains game roam freely on the Reserve and predators although not always easy to spot, are nevertheless common residents of the area. Lions and Cheetahs are frequently seen and often heard. There is a healthy black rhino and leopard population and hyenas are also often seen and heard.

Etosha game drives: Etosha is a 22 750km² wildlife sanctuary in Namibia – one of Africa’s most stable and accessible countries. Etosha, meaning ‘place of dry water’, and refers to a flat calcrete depression (or pan) of about 5 000km². The ‘Pan’ (overlooked by the Onguma Reserve) provides a great, parched, silver-white backdrop of shimmering mirages to an area of semi-arid savannah grassland and thorn scrub. The pan itself contains water only after very good rains and sometimes for only a few days each year, but is enough to stimulate the growth of a blue-green algae which lures thousands of flamingos.
